HOMEOWNER/INSTALLER RESPONSIBILITY
It is the Homeowners and installers responsibility to determine if the job site subfloor and job site conditions are environmentally and structurally acceptable for the hardwood installation. It is also the homeowners and installers responsibility to carefully examine the flooring prior to installation for any defective boards. Do not install defective boards, in some cases a partial board can be used as a starter board (end damage from shipping). USE CONSTITUTES ACCEPTANCE. Tapestry flooring declines any responsibility for wood floor failures resulting from or connected with subfloor, job site damage or deficiencies after hardwood has been installed.
Tapestry approves the use of Recommended Urethane Adhesives.
The use of urethane 3 in 1 adhesives are most suited for positive installation results. 3 in 1 adhesives (adhesive, sound reduction and moisture barrier) that offer a Warranty from their manufacturers for sub floor moisture intrusion. Titebond 821, Bostik Greenforce, Bostick Vapor lock. These adhesives are best when gluing down Tapestry hardwood floors to concrete slabs. Check with local dealer for more information. Check trowel size recommendation for each adhesive , it will vary for desired installation. Each adhesive will have a different trowel specification.
CHECKING THE SUBFLOOR
Recommended moisture sealer must be used if the concrete or soft concrete emissions are greater than 3lbs per 1000 sq ft on the calcium chloride testing (ASTM F1869). Wood type subfloors should also be checked by using a moisture meter. Wood or wood subfloors should not exceed 12% moisture content. The moisture content between hardwood floor and subfloor should not exceed 4% differential. Check with dealer for geographical variances.
HANDLING AND STORAGE
Upon delivery, check the flooring’s moisture content with a moisture meter as it should be ranging from 8%-10% and record it as a baseline and keep for required acclimation level.
ACCLIMATION
It is critical to allow the floors to acclimate in the house and/or building that will be installed for at least 72 hours prior to the installation, and this is a must for extremely dry climate states such as Utah, Arizona, Idaho, Nevada etc. Keep all boxes across from each other (tic tac toe pattern) and tear the short ends of the boxes for the air to flow. Failure to do so the flooring may lose moisture or gain moisture therefore, it may shrink or expand and will affect the installation process.
RADIANT HEAT INSTALLATION
Tapestry oak and hickory specie are approved for radiant heat system installation’s assuming that the radiant heat system was designed for engineered hardwood installation and assuming steps below are strictly followed. Failure to follow these steps can void your warranty and may produce unsatisfactory results.
- Prior to installation read and understand NWFA Radiant Heat Installation Appendix H.
- The subfloor can be concrete wood or both.
- All subfloors must be prepared and tested as detailed on page 1 under “Checking the subfloor”
- Install the radiant heat subfloor per manufacturer’s instructions
- The radiant heating system should be fully operating and turn on at a normal temperature for at least 21 days before flooring installation.
- Twenty- four (24) hours prior to installing Tapestry Hardwood, the system should be turned off to avoid hot spot areas that could shrink or damage flooring.
- The radiant heat can be turned back on to a low temperature setting twenty-four hours after the installation, and moderate temperature within 14 days to help hardwood temperature adjust
- Radiant heat temperature should never be adjusted more than 2 degrees Fahrenheit per day.
- Floor temperature must not exceed eighty-five degrees Fahrenheit as this may cause the boards to dry-crack, split, warp, or delaminate all are not covered by Tapestry Hardwood
- Radiant heating systems usually create dry heat that can lower the relative humidity levels. It may be necessary to add humidity to maintain the recommended levels of (35-55%) and prevent certain damage to the wood floor.
Installation Guidelines
GLUE DOWN INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
Snap a chalk line from the wall on the door side of the room. The small area will be your working space and the last to be installed. Temporarily nail straight board on the chalk line. ( later you will remove the board) The wood floor should be installed from several cartons at the same time to ensure color and shade mix. End joints should never be closer than 10” from each other. The tongue and groove should be engaged by hand, pounding boards together is not recommended, you can fracture core or damage edges. Stagger boards and end joints appropriately for best visual effect, never line up end joints. If needed use 3M Scotchgard painter’s tape delicate surface 2080 blue tape to maintain a tight floor. Expansion space should be left around the perimeter of the flooring and the thickness should be a minimum of 3/8”. Remember to use approved adhesive outlined in “Urethane Adhesive section”
STAPLE OR NAIL DOWN INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
Due to the extra wide width and extra long length of the product, Tapestry Hardwood Floors recommends either Titebond Tongue and Groove glue or CalFlor D3 Eurobond glue to be spread on the grooves of each plank. This is a glue assist concept to keep these long and wide boards from expanding and contracting over time. Glue assist can also be achieved by spreading urethane adhesive on subfloor perpendicular to each plank, four trowel passes per 7’ length throughout the installation (with glue assist on subfloor, felt paper will not be needed). Cover the floor with 15lb. asphalt flooring felt paper, this will prevent squeaks and hold moisture. The wood floor should be installed from several cartons at the same time to ensure color and shade mix. End joints should never be closer than 10” from each other. The tongue and groove should be engaged by hand, pounding boards together is not recommended, you can fracture core or damage edges. For all flooring ½” to 5/8” thick Engineered flooring use 1 ½” staples or cleats. Stagger boards and end joints appropriately for best visual effect, neve line up end joints. Expansion space should be left around the perimeter of the flooring and the thickness should be a minimum of 3/8”. Always be cautious when the using the power nail that requires a rubber hammer as to much force may chip or damage the edges of the planks and PSI of the compressor maybe necessary to be adjusted. Also be sure to adjust the bottom rubber bumpers so it is suitable for the thickness of the floor you are installing.
FLOATING INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
Tapestry Hardwood Floors recommends either Titebond Tongue and Groove glue or CalFlor D3 Eurobond glue to be spread on the grooves of each plank. Cover the floor with at least 2mm or thicker underlayment that has sound and moisture barrier. Spread glue evenly throughout the groove and insert the tongue side afterward. Make sure you do not overspread the glue. You can float Tapestry Hardwood On grade, below grade or above grade as long as installation guidelines are followed. The wood floor should be installed from several cartons at the same time to ensure color and shade mix. End joints should never be closer than 10” from each other. Stagger boards and end joints appropriately for best visual effect, never line up end joints. Expansion space should be left around the perimeter of the flooring and the thickness should be a minimum of 3/8”. Trim the underlayment before installing moldings or baseboards.
